Studies of Life Cycle Assessment have been considered one of the best instruments for quantifying the environmental cost of products and services. This technique, in its simplest form, the Life Cycle Thinking, becomes a powerful tool to be applied to continuous improvement of existing processes and to guide further development of products and processes to become more sustainable. Applying this concept to the packages unfolds into four trends to be pursued in the next decade: Optimization of the product/package system, Reuse & Recycling, Waste Management & Reverse Logistics and Credibility and Ethics. Optimization of Package System: rethink the packaging challenging their limits of weight, shape, materials and accessories without compromising the integrity of the product. Maximize the mass ratio between content and packaging, concentrate products , reduce sizes, distribute more units per volume transported. Life Cycle Thinking & Supply Chain, or “Think about Life Cycle” throughout the production chain have proven to be an effective tool in implementing initiatives that reduce the environmental impact of products and processes.
