safety & regulatory issues

(THAKUR; KARLSEN; FORÁS, 2012). Radio-Frequency

Identification (RFID) and other traceability systems offer

significant opportunities for manufacturers, retailers

and consumers.

Finally, communication between themanufacturer

and the package user is essential for all parties to comply

with safety requirements, since the flow of information

must be reciprocal/interactive in order to continuously

improve the systems. Picture 8.1 illustrates an example

of information flow in the food chain.

Traceability is another tool that becomes

increasingly necessary for the safety and identification

of origin of packaged products and is now a requirement

of some laws, for example, European legislation and

certification standards. According to the international

organization for standardization (ISO NS-8402),

traceability is the ability to track the history and use

and to locate an entity by means of recorded/ registered

information. The item to be tracked can be physical

or virtual and must have a unique identification
